Directed by Sunil Shankar, with Assistant Director Irfan Anwar, ‘Anji’ was a satirical comedy, that focused on the life of a 38-year old unmarried woman named Anji, who, after years of being the sole bread-earner for her family, wished to start a new chapter in her life by settling down and enjoying a married life of her own.
It was during her pursuit for a perfect man that she encountered numerous characters along the way. Personalities introduced throughout the play highlighted the play’s comedic side. However, the ending took a sharp turn as Anji encountered an unpleasant fate at the hands of a charming stranger. She was forced to face the reality of her situation – a situation where she felt utterly alone and helpless.
The strength of its plot helped the play to highlight the struggles faced by women in society, and how pressured and vulnerable they are made to feel in the outside world. The amount of effort put into bringing this play to life was validated through its resounding success. It helped capture the essence of the Stage Nomad, accomplishing what it set out to do.
